Still Deciding? Get Used to It

How do iMessage, FaceTime, and RCS work between iPhone and Android?

iMessage is Apple’s messaging service, while RCS can support richer text conversations between compatible iPhones and Android phones when available from the carrier. An Android user can join an Apple FaceTime call through a supported browser link, but does not start an ordinary FaceTime call from the Android browser.

What to do

  1. For cross-platform texts, check whether RCS is enabled in your Android messaging app and supported by the iPhone user’s carrier.
  2. On a supported iPhone, check Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.
  3. If RCS is unavailable, SMS/MMS may be used instead, with fewer features.
  4. To include an Android user in FaceTime, ask someone using an Apple device to create and share a FaceTime link, then join it from Chrome or Edge on Android.

Limits and compatibility notes

Check this before relying on the answer RCS features and encryption capabilities vary by carrier, region, device, and software version; never promise identical behavior or end-to-end encryption for every cross-platform conversation. iMessage itself is not an Android app.
